Permanent Residency

The permanent residency of Canada is a status that is given by IRCC to the person who has completed the criteria to become PR of Canada. The permanent residency status is second to Citizen of Canada. This status leads towards Citizenship of Canada provided the person meets the criteria laid by the IRCC.

Understanding Express Entry:

What is the Express Entry Program for Migrating to Canada?

Canada’s Express Entry (EE) system is a selection process used by the Canadian government’s department of “Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada” (IRCC) to select skilled immigrants to become permanent residents of Canada. In order to enter the pool, eligible candidates must meet the Canadian Express Entry requirements by qualifying for one of the following Canadian immigration programs.

Express Entry encompasses three Canadian Immigration Programs:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • The Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • The Canadian Experience Class

Some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) also have an Express Entry component. If you receive a nomination from a provincial authority, then you are able to include the respective approval on your Express Entry submission.

Express Entry Processing Time

If you are eligible for Express Entry, After you apply, you can stay in the pool for up to 12 months depending on your CRS score and the government’s objective during the respective draws. If you receive ITA, then you will have 60 days from the date of ITA to submit an online application for permanent residency.

Note: The IRCC aims to process your application for permanent residency within 6 months but actual time may vary depending the profile. If you do not receive an ITA within 12 months you will need to re apply to re-enter in the pool.

Comprehensive Ranking System

Applicants are ranked on a system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which determines who gets selected from the Express Entry Pool first. This system scores you based on four main factors:

  • Human Capital Factors;
  • Spouse and Common Law Partner;
  • Skill Transferability; and
  • Additional Factors

These additional factors take into account:

  • Age;
  • Work experience;
  • Education qualifications;
  • Language skills;
  • Adaptability;
  • Job offers; and
  • Spouse or common-law partner

The higher applicants’ scores on the CRS, the better their chances of becoming a permanent resident of Canada. The highest you can score on this system is 1,200 points.

There are several ways to improve your CRS scores, like receiving a Provincial Nomination that adds an extra 600 points. Canadian job offers are also worth 50-600 Points. For example, a job offer from a level 00 job under the National Occupation Classification (NOC) will give you an additional 200 points. Any other job level offer from a Canadian employer will give you an additional 50 points. A job offer under a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) will give 600 CRS points.

Another way to increase your score is through Core Human Capital Factors (600 Points) This awards points for education qualifications like certificates, diplomas and degrees. The higher your educational qualifications, the better the score you will receive.
